Eaton Circuit Breaker Buyer's Guide: BR115, Molded Case Breakers, and 1 Pole vs 2 Pole Contactors
There's no single best Eaton circuit breaker. If someone says one breaker covers all situations, they haven't spent much time at a receiving dock.
I work as a quality/compliance manager at an electrical supply distributor. I review incoming stock and returns, usually 150-200 line items a week, and most of the expensive mistakes I catch are not from cheap products. They're from products that almost match. That's why this guide is organized by scenario: replacing an Eaton BR115 circuit breaker, choosing an Eaton molded case circuit breaker, or deciding between a 1 pole vs 2 pole contactor. Once you identify the actual job, price comparison becomes much easier.
One timing note before the details: this is based on common product identification practices I see in 2024. Eaton changes catalog numbers, and code adoption changes by location, so verify the part against the nameplate before ordering.
Stop shopping by brand name alone
Eaton circuit breakers are not one big family. A BR115 is a plug-on breaker for a BR-style load center. A molded case circuit breaker Eaton is a different equipment class. When buyers skip over that first split, they end up returning parts and paying freight both ways. The rest of this guide follows three scenarios. Find the one that looks like your job.
Scenario A: Replacing an Eaton BR115 circuit breaker in a BR load center
An Eaton BR115 circuit breaker is a 15 amp single pole breaker from the BR family. It is used in Eaton panels that are marked for Type BR breakers. If you are replacing an old BR115, the safest replacement is the same catalog family, not a generic compatible.
Here is where I focus during inspection:
- Amperage: BR115 is a 15 amp breaker. If the circuit is wired and calculated for 20 amps, a BR115 should not be used just because it looks similar.
- Pole count: BR115 is single pole. For a 120V branch circuit, that is usually correct.
- Type of protection: If the old breaker has a test button, it means it provides AFCI or GFCI protection. A standard BR115 is not the same product. Replace it with an AFCI or GFCI version rated for the BR panel.
This is the part that surprises some buyers: paying more for a heavier industrial breaker does not make a BR load center safer. If the panel and breaker are not listed for each other, the installation is wrong. The BR115 is the better choice when it matches the panel and the circuit. Spec compliance is not the same as picking the highest price.
Scenario B: Specing an industrial Eaton molded case circuit breaker
Searching for molded case circuit breaker Eaton usually points to a heavier breaker used in panelboards, switchboards, or motor control centers. These breakers are often bolted in place, have more ampere ratings, and require more than a passing glance at the photo.
At minimum, you need to match these details:
- Voltage, phase, and poles. A 480V three-phase system normally needs a three-pole breaker. A 240V single-phase system may need two poles. A simple 120V branch may need one pole.
- Frame and trip rating. The frame is the mechanical structure; the trip rating is the current at which it operates. A 100 amp frame can be fitted with a lower amp trip.
- Interrupting rating, or AIC. This tells you how much fault current the breaker can safely interrupt. It must meet or exceed the available fault current at the installation.
- Panel listing. The breaker must be listed for use in the specific panelboard or switchboard.
Here is my unpopular quality opinion: a higher interrupting rating is not automatically a safety upgrade. If the available fault current is 10kA and a standard breaker is rated 22kA, buying a 65kA frame adds cost without improving normal operation. But if the available fault current is 30kA, a 22kA breaker is dangerous. The correct part is the one that matches the engineer's fault-current calculation and the panel label.
When you look at an Eaton molded case circuit breaker, read the full catalog number before trusting the model description. Two breakers can look identical from the front and have different poles, trip units, and AIC ratings.
Scenario C: If your question is 1 pole vs 2 pole contactor
If your question is 1 pole vs 2 pole contactor, you have left the circuit breaker world for a moment. A contactor is not a breaker. It does not provide overcurrent protection. A circuit breaker protects the wiring and equipment. A contactor is a switch that opens and closes a power circuit repeatedly.
The pole count on a contactor tells you how many load contacts it has:
- A one-pole contactor switches one hot conductor. It is often used for a 120V load when only the ungrounded conductor needs to be opened.
- A two-pole contactor switches two hot conductors. It is used for 208/240V single-phase loads or when the equipment design requires both line conductors to be opened.
Do not choose a contactor without checking the coil voltage. A two-pole contactor can be built with a 24V coil, a 120V coil, or another control voltage. If the coil voltage does not match the control circuit, the contactor will not pull in. The cost of discovering that after installation is higher than any price difference at order time.
Also remember that the amp rating on a contactor is not a substitute for branch circuit protection. You may need a breaker and a contactor in the same circuit. They are separate decisions.
I apply the same logic to other parts that show up in the same supply orders. An air filter 16x20x1 is completely different from the same face size with a different depth. An LS spark plug wire set can look right and still have the wrong terminal angle or wire length for the vehicle. Those filters and ignition wires are not Eaton electrical products, but the quality rule is the same: the label must match the application before you compare price.
Which scenario are you in?
If you are not sure which section applies to you, run through this final checklist. This is the same process I use when a quote comes across for approval.
- Identify the old device or equipment. Read the existing breaker label or contactor coil label first.
- Identify the panel or system. The panel label usually lists accepted breaker types. If it says Type BR, the BR115 family is the correct direction. If it says nothing useful, photograph the label and find the product marking.
- Separate switching from protection. If the job is about protecting the wire, choose a breaker. If the job is about controlling a load, choose a contactor. Some jobs need both.
- Then bring price into the comparison. Total cost includes the breaker price, freight, labor, downtime, and the possibility of a return or code violation. A part that does not fit always costs more than the correct part.
When a customer tells me they found a deal on a breaker that looks similar, I do not hear savings. I hear a potential return. Find the scenario, match the label, and let the total cost fall into place. That is how you make an Eaton circuit breaker decision without turning it into a second job.
