I work in quality management at an electrical equipment manufacturer — the kind of company that puts UL-listed breakers in boxes before they ship. I'm not an electrician, and I'm not a small-engine mechanic. But for the past seven years, I've reviewed product specs, warranty returns, and field test reports on thousands of circuit breakers and transfer switches. So when people ask about Eaton circuit breakers or household generator maintenance, these are the questions that actually come up.
What’s the difference between Eaton and Cutler-Hammer circuit breakers?
Eaton acquired Cutler-Hammer in 1978, and the Cutler-Hammer name stuck on a lot of residential and commercial load centers. Today, the same breakers are sold under the Eaton brand, and the older Cutler-Hammer panels were designed to accept Eaton's BR or CH series breakers — depending on what the panel label says.
Here's where quality checks matter: don't assume. A “Cutler-Hammer” panel label might say “Use Type BR” or “Use Type CH.” If it says BR, then a current Eaton BR breaker is the correct replacement. If it says CH, use a CH breaker. That label is there for a reason. I've reviewed warranty returns where a different series was installed in a BR panel; the connection wasn't rated, and the breaker eventually failed. Not the kind of shortcut you want.
What is the Eaton BR120 circuit breaker?
The BR120 is a 1-pole, 20-amp molded-case circuit breaker with a standard 1-inch BR footprint. It's one of the most common residential breakers I sign off on. It fits Eaton BR load centers and many older Cutler-Hammer BR panels, and it's listed to UL 489, the standard for molded-case circuit breakers.
The “BR” designation is more than a model prefix. Other breaker series can look similar but aren't interchangeable. A BR120 is for a 20A circuit — lighting, general outlets, that kind of load. Need 15A? That's the BR115. Sounds obvious, but I've rejected more than one batch because someone ordered the wrong current rating.
Can I use any breaker that fits my panel?
No. Fitting is not the same as being listed. A panel's label identifies the specific breaker types that were tested for that enclosure. A breaker can snap into place and still be the wrong series — or rather, not the series listed on the panel label. Even if it's the same brand, different series are engineered for different bus styles and mounting requirements.
Using the wrong breaker can void the panel listing and create a hazard you can't see. I say that as the guy who has photographed the aftermath of a misapplied breaker. It's not pretty. Stick to the exact type on the label.
How does a whole house generator work?
A whole house generator is a stationary engine that spins an alternator. It runs on natural gas, propane, or diesel. The heart of the system is the automatic transfer switch. It watches utility power. When utility voltage drops below a threshold, the switch starts the generator, waits for it to stabilize, then moves the house load to generator power.
When utility power returns, the switch transfers back, lets the generator cool down, and shuts it off. The generator itself has a circuit breaker to protect the wiring. I've seen manual interlock setups used instead of an automatic transfer switch — that can work, but the details matter. And the transfer switch has to match the generator's rated output; otherwise the main breaker can trip when you need power most. If you're not sure, get a qualified electrician.
What spark plug torque should I use when servicing a generator?
Most small generator engines call for a spark plug torque in the 15–20 ft-lb range. For example, many Honda GX-series engines specify 18 ft-lb (I verified that in the GX160 owner's manual, 2019 edition). Some engines spec as low as 14 ft-lb, some up to 22. Check your manual — the number isn't universal.
Why does torque matter? Too loose, and the plug overheats; too tight, and you can strip the aluminum threads. So glad I bought a torque wrench before replacing the plug in my own generator. The first time I didn't, I came close to pulling threads on a $400 engine. That's a lesson you only want to learn once. And don't forget the gap spec — correct torque doesn't fix a plug that's gapped wrong.
Why do I need a spark plug boot tool?
A spark plug boot tool is a small L-shaped hook that grabs the rubber boot without yanking the wire. That may sound trivial, but pulling on the cable can break the carbon core inside the spark plug wire, which leads to arcing and misfires. On many generator engines, the boot sits recessed under cooling shrouds, and the tool makes the job manageable.
These tools are cheap (around $5–10 on Amazon, as of January 2025; prices move, so verify before you order). That's still a lot less than a new ignition coil, and it makes the job take five minutes instead of forty. From a quality standpoint, that's just using the right tool instead of forcing the job.
What breaker upgrades should I consider in 2025?
Code requirements keep moving. As of the 2023 edition of NFPA 70 (NEC), AFCI protection is required in more living areas than it was a decade ago, and GFCI coverage has expanded in kitchens and laundry rooms. What was “good enough” for a house built in 1998 may not meet today's standard. What was best practice in 2020 may not apply in 2025.
But the fundamentals haven't changed: match the breaker to the panel label, match the ampere rating to the wire size, and respect the listing. If you're replacing breakers in an older panel, work with a licensed electrician to confirm the newer AFCI or GFCI breakers are compatible with that panel. Execution has changed, not the physics.
